 SITEBUILDER: Adding Sound and Video
Solution

Attaching a file

It is possible to make sound and movies files available for download from your Recipero hosted website. We recommend that sounds are stored in MP3 or WMA format and that movies are stored in MPEG4 or WMV format. These formats are the most efficient way of storing and transferring the files.

To convert your sound or movie file to a WMA or WMV respectively, we recommend the use of Windows Media Encoder, available free of charge from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia.

Once you have the files ready to go on the website, simply edit the page you wish to attach them to, scroll right down to the bottom and click the 'Browse' button. A file dialog box will pop up and you will then be able to select the relevant file to make it available for download.

Once you click 'Save & Close', the file will be uploaded to the site. Depending on the file size, this may take some time. Do not click until you are taken back to the page. Doing this will cancel your file upload. Please note that you will be only able to upload files up to a size of 2MB (approximately 2,000 KB).

To play the attached file, you can simply scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the attachment. We do however recommend that you instruct visitors to 'Right Click' and 'Save Target As' to save the Audio / Movie file down to their computers. This will ensure smooth playback and the best possible experience.

Embedding a file

Rather than attach a file at the bottom of the page, you may prefer to link to the file in the content. This is called ‘embedding’. Firstly you need to follow the method above to attach the file at the bottom of the page. Hover your mouse over the files icon (once you have attached it to your website) and press the right mouse button. Now click Properties. You now need to copy the entire contents of the Address (URL) lines in the pop-up window that you see. Place the mouse at the beginning of the line and with the left mouse button held down drag the mouse down to select the whole address. Now press Ctrl + C to copy the address. Now you can create the link using Ctrl + V to paste the address into the page.

Alternatively, or for larger files, you may wish to use a service like YouTube. Copy the code they provide and switch to the Code tab at the bottom of the editing box. Now insert the contents of the code where you want the video inserted. Please note however that YouTube is a third party service and so we can provide assistance relating to any files stored with them.

General Advice

It is also good 'netiquette' to inform visitors of the size of the attached file so they can estimate how long it will take them to download it. To find the size of a file, right click on the file on your computer (not on the website) and choose 'Properties'. The size will be shown in kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB). We do not recommend attaching files greater than a few MB in size to the website.
